As a skater, denim is a second skin.
Sierra Prescott grew up skating through the sprawling concrete playground of Los Angeles, living a life in constant motion. As a kid, she was inspired by skate culture icons like X Games, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and Rocket Power. She fell in love with not just the sport but the lifestyle. “Skating is like dancing with the world beneath your feet.”
Now as a professional skateboarder, photographer, and author, denim isn’t just something to wear. It’s a second skin. “My pants need to pass a fall test,” she laughs. “If I fall once and there’s already a hole, I’m like, well, these aren’t skate pants at all.”
The extra protection that denim provides is clutch for Sierra when she’s on the board. And off the board, it fits wherever the day takes her – on a photoshoot, traveling, or rolling through her neighborhood coffee shop. It’s a steady choice that keeps up with her pace: resilient, ready, and made to move.
Sierra defines her own style. She describes herself as simple and casual, not frilly or sparkly. Most days, you can find her in baggy mid-rise jeans, a striped or solid cotton T-shirt, and skate shoes. When she’s on her board, she likes to wear layers and fabrics with flow, “There’s this visual romance in the movements that I love.”

Sierra has her favorites. Like the baggy jeans with just the right give, or the pair that survived dozens of falls and still look great. For her, style has always been about intuition, wearing what feels right, not what’s trending. She follows her own rhythm.

For Sierra, denim isn’t disposable. It holds memories. She wears her jeans until the knees (or the butt) give out, then she sews and patches them, hanging onto them as long as she can. Some pairs she can’t even bring herself to let go of. Not yet, anyway. “I know they’re too far gone, but I’ll stash them away because they’ve been with me through so much.”
Her wardrobe is full of pieces with personal history: jeans she’s loved and worn and torn. When it is finally time to part with something, she finds a way to pass it on by donating or recycling it through Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green program. “Recycling is like a book with never-ending chapters,” she says, and she’s inspired by what her denim can become.
To Sierra, sustainability is a mindset. It’s about being intentional and caring about the impact your choices have on the planet and the people in it. “I think sustainability is in the same world as just being a good person. It’s caring about things beyond yourself.”
